Bulgarian-born film and game composer and orchestrator Penka Kouneva is one of the most highly respected professionals in her field. National Public Radio called her “an artist of uncommon passion” and her music “exquisite”, and Billboard Magazine called her “an exceptional talent” with the ability to create “music of the deepest beauty.”
The award-winning Kouneva wrote the scores for the games Prince of Persia, Transformers (with Steve Jablonsky, the feature film composer), The Mummy VR game, and The Woman Astronaut, through Universal Music. She orchestrated the music for the highly successful World or Warcraftgames, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadow, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Heroes of the Storm, Bloodborne, Dragon Age 2 and Sims 3.
A Sundance composer fellow, Kouneva scored the independent feature films Devil’s Whisper, Dorian Gray, Primrose Lane and Midnight Movie. She has arranged and orchestrated some of the most successful feature films including The Matrix, Transformers and Elysium, as well as the action film Need for Speed and science-fiction favorite Ender’s Game. For NASA, Kouneva composed the score for the $30 million-dollar exhibit about the American astronauts, “Heroes and Legends”, which is permanently housed at the Kennedy Space Center.
Kouneva is a winner of the Game Audio Network Guild’s 2015 Recognition Award, the Aspen Composer Fellowship and many others. She is passionate about innovation, artist development and mentoring.
